-End of Arethusa Falls Road, Bartlett, New Hampshire
-1.6 miles each way if just doing all falls, 4.8 mile loop if do all falls and cliffs
-easy and moderate
-outhouse bathrooms at far side of parking lot
-nearby: Ripley Falls, Mount Willey/Field/Tom, Mount Lafayette/Lincoln/Little Haystack/Falling Waters Falls, Basin Cascade, Mount Willard
-notes:
-giant dirt parking lot off of highway, free
-trails are well marked but also easy to follow without markers
-Bemis Brook Trail (Coliseum Falls/Bemis Brook Falls/Fawn Pool) is very steep, slick, rooty, and eroded at the end of the trail (if starting from the parking lot). Many say it is easier to hit these falls on the way back from Arethusa, instead of on the way to. I have done it both directions, and it is substantially easier to come down the giant hill of roots than it is to go up it, so do this trail on the way back from Arethusa. Besides the one hill of erosion, the rest of this trail is fairly flat and has minimal to no stepping the entire way.
-each fall is labeled by a white sign hung in a tree
-Arethusa trail is steep
in very beginning, then levels out. Has some hills along the way, and a couple
sets of stairs, but gives breaks inbetween so it isn't constant climbing. Has a
steeper hill at the end to get to the base of the falls
-Coliseum, Bemis Brook Falls and Fawn Pool are all small but pretty. Arethusa is approx a 140 foot plunge waterfall.
-all of these falls are dependent on rainfall and aren't much more than a trickle flow without it. would be impressive with a lot of water
-no debris in the falls
-unobstructed views of the falls
-trail is shaded, falls is partially in the sun
-can continue the trail after Arethusa Falls to go to Frankenstein Cliffs. The trail has varying incline and erosion. There are a lot of exposed roots, but also some flat easy areas as well.
-Frankenstein Cliffs offers a 180 degree view of the valley
-trail becomes very slick when it rains
-the end of the trail is a lot of declines, a lot of rocks/stepping down, and an elevated railroad that you have to walk under.
-has some bugs
-can bring dogs
